Nr.I: EUROPE, 28.09.2006 - 05.02.2007
05.02.2007, Antalya (Turkey): We are hiking for a few days around western Crete, and continue riding along the northcoast eastwards. Warm and sunny weather is good company. With the ferry we are shipping over to Rhodes and further on to Marmaris in Turkey - Europe is lying behind us :-) In Marmaris we run into the first other bikers - Christine and Stefan. They are on their way to Australia and for four days we are pushing pedals together - across lots of hills towards east. Check out the english version of their page: http://www.radfahren-gegen-krebs.de/en/ After we separate rainshowers accompany us (yes, splitting was hard, also the sky is crying...) and we reach Marmaris...
23.01.2007, Hania on Crete (Greece): We stay for a few days in the capital of Greece and travel in (almost only) perfect weather across the Peloponnes. For the first time we are wearing shorts. For the first time we take a swim in the sea. An exhausting but beautiful ride across the mountaineous country - until we reach Kalamata. We take the ferry over to Creta, where we are helping Philipp's relatives by harvesting Olives...
13.01.2007, Athen in Griechenland: In Greece summer really starts - temperatures up to 20 degrees - and we are travelling with short sleeves :-) After a shooting with the greek television we cycle towards Volos, where we are climbing for a day. Biking across the mountainous island Evia we get closer to Athens and on the city-highway we are cruising into the heart of the metropolis...
03.01.2007, Thessaloniki in Greece: Some snowfall when we took off from Beograd - very ususal. But suddenly the weather changes and it is sunny and warm all the way through Serbia, Makedonia and until we reach Greece. We are celebrating Newyear with friends in a small village in Makedonia and made it to Thessaloniki yesterday. Oranges on the trees - summer?
24.12.2006, Christmas in the "Hyatt Hotel" of Beograd: An invitation of the hotelmanager - a wunderful room and an amazing breakfast-buffet! THANKS A LOT!
22.12.2006, Novi Sad in Serbien: After a too long stop in Austria, due to illness, we started again on 17th. Weather was as usual. Rain, fogg and mostly cloudy. Through Slovenia and Croatia we get into Serbia. Saying of the day when we were asking for the way: "Go to the next traffic light, then ask again. This is Serbia. Caos. Like Spaghetti! Have a nice stay!"...
03.12.2006, Graz in Austria: We are cruising southwards. Suddenly it is getting warmer and we can leave our long underwear in the bike-bags. Anyhow, rain-showers are still with us and - new on the list - thick and wet fog. Via Wroclaw and Olomouc (already in the Tchech Republic) we get to Austria and after a nice and sunny day on Semmering (mountain pass) we reach Graz - the first 4000 warming-up-kilometers are behind us.
17.11.2006, Torun in Poland: We left Riga already with a one day delay - snow is drifting through the streets and we are again unpacking our bags and stay one more night. The following days in Lithuania and our first days in Poland are characterised by precipitation, fog and a permanent cover of clouds. Friendly people, mostly good roads and the last two days - listen and be amazed - SUNSHINE!!! At the time we are in Torun - so far the largest and most beautiful town in Poland on our way... - the culinary highlight is obviously Pizza - we bet here are more Pizzarias than in Rome and Pisa together... 04.11.2006, Riga in Latvia: After a short ferry-ride we reached Tallin in Estonia - a beautiful city, but also here heavens doors are wide open to poor loads of water over us. Further south on the Via Baltica we enjoyed a nice combination of rain, headwinds and finally heavy snowfall. Now we are relaxing at friends in Riga and we are happy about seeing the sun for the first time since weeks...
27.10.2006, Helsinki in Finnland: We are on our way south along the westcoast of Finnland. Finally it became warmer - but anyway rain and snow is following us on our way... However, we are lucky and dont get wet too often, because rain seems to fall preferrably during nighttime. Yesterday we reached Helsinki (of course by rainfall) - our first big target on the way!! Tomorrow we are heading to Tallin. Therefore we want to say goodbye to Finnland and thank all friends and friends of friends who offered a dry place to sleep to us and put us into Sauna to get warm again!!
19.10.2006, Oulu in Finnland: After some heavy snowfall (again), the weather finally became better. Cloudless days and nights - but freezing temperatures. This morning the thermometer was down on -8. We slept at the place of friends - in a campmobile. We were lucky? No, the heating failed! The "weathermakers" of Finnland are talking about positive temperatures from next week on - and rain... We are making an average of about 100 km per day. Riding over low hills and mainly through forest. Two days ago we were smiling from the front page of the local newspaper - suddenly also the usually reserved Finns started to wave at us from behind their windscreens :-) 15.10.2006, our first days in Finnland: freezing nights, northern-lights, icy streets and in between sometimes five minutes of sunshine... 12.10.2006, on the way towards Finnland: rain and storm...
09.10.2006, start on the Northcape: 12:52 o`clock. First time pushing the pedales. No wind, temperatures around zero, a little snow on the mountains. Reindeer to the left and right of the road...
30.09.2006, farewell-party in Graz, Austria: today we are partying with our friends and relatives in the English pub "Prince Charles" - the start of our trip is close...  29.09.2006, Graz, Austria: after three month on Spitsbergen and Greenland we are doing final preparations for our world-tour. On the 8th of October we will take a flight to Northcape and off we go... Just got an SMS from Finnland - the first snow was falling in the north ;-)
