--- Cyclists we met I ---

October 2006 - December 2008

(Europe, SW-Asia, Africa, Australia, Indien)

02.01.2009, Chaudi (ndia). Holm and Julia: It is already getting late as we are pedaling the last kilometers to Agonda and meet Holm and Julia in the small village of Chaudi. The couple started 10 months ago in Germany with direction east... www.strassenkreuzer.org

04.12. to 06.12.2008, Perth (Western Australia). Jeff: We have just finished our cyrcle around Australia and stay with a nice cyclists-family in Perth. They get another visitor - Jeff. The American starts his trip around the southwest of Australia...

06.07.2008 (Silent Grove on the Gibb River Road), 09.07.2008 (Windjana Gorge on the Gibb River Road), 12. to 13.07.2007 (Derby), and 15. to 17.07.2008 (Broome). Western Australia. Steve and Jon: We have heard about those two cyclists ahead of us since a while and have even been on their website to see who that might be. On the 06th of July we meet up with Jon and Steve for the first time. The Australian father-and-son-duo are riding from Brisbane to Broome (about 5.000 kilometers) to raise money for the social organizations “Plan” (www.plan.org.au) and “beyondblue” (www.beyondblue.org.au). We meet the two sympathic guys two times on the Gibb (a 800 kilometre long dirt-road in Australia’s northwest – see also news and reports, Australia III), we are camping together in Derby and meet again in Broome where the duo is having their final presentation. Congratulations!!! www.brisbanetobroome.com

29.06.2008, shortly before the Pentacost River Ford (Western Australia). Sean: We are hopping slowly over the corrugations of the Gibb River Road, as a solo-cyclist is coming along the other way. Sean is a crazy character – with a cheapie-bike, 3 liters of water and just a small backpack, he is riding the Gibb River Road (see news and reports, Australia III), a 800 kilometre long dirt-road. He is a happy guy and wants to get to Southeast-Asia…

21.06.2008 - 03.06.2008, just after Katherine until the Hann River on the Gibb River Road (Northern Territory and Western Australia). Paul: We meet Paul at a rest-area, shortly after we have left Katherine. The young Australian is riding from Melbourne anticlockwise around Australia. He didn’t have the plan to pedal the “Gibb River Road” (a 800 kilometre long dirt-road in Australia’s northwest), but he decides to join us and together we start hopping along the sandy and corrugated track (see news and reports, Australia III). We part again after 13 days, since he wants to continue at his own pace, having a day off that day and probably just enjoying to have back his own space. Everybody has his own routines and rhythm, so after a while it’s good for all of us to go back to our own. Although it was a nice time together! www.adventureforsustainability.com

13.06.2008, Daly Waters Roadhouse (Northern Territory). Henk and Katrien: At the Daly Waters roadhouse we actually only wanted to fill up water for the night, then ride on a bit to find a good bushcamp along the road. But all of a sudden we see another cycling-couple. We chat, stay and enjoy a way too expensive beer in the famous pub. The two Belgians started in China at winter time, have been sweating across Southeast-Asia and are now heading against the heavy southeasterlies towards Brisbane. Then they will continue in New Zealand... www.henhkatrien.shareyourstory.nl

02.06.2008, on our way to Cloncurry (Queensland, Australia). Gilbert: We are flying with tailwind across the country as a cyclist is fighting his way from the other direction. Gilbert is 68 and was riding from Brisbane (where he lives) to the airport (in Darwin) to get to Thailand and Malaysia - because that's where he was touring the last months. Now he is on his way back - from the airport in Darwin to Brisbane... WOW!!!

26.05.2008, Dingo (Queensland, Australia). Phil and Alf: We meet the two Australiens on our way from the eastcoast to the center and camp together. They are on their way from Canberra to Mackay.

18.03.2008, Great Ocean Road (Victoria, Australia). Boudewijn: After a never-ending big climb into the forested hills along the “Great Ocean Road” we meet a cyclist coming from the other direction. Boudewijn was in New Zealand before and has just started his Australia-trip, which will take him from Melbourne to Darwin

17.03.2008, Great Ocean Road (Victoria, Australia). Stefan and Christine: We got to know these two great Germans a year ago in Turkey, where we rode a couple of nice days together along the south-coast (see bikers we met 05.02.2007 and News and reports: SW-Asia). We went on towards Syria and further to Africa, while Stefan and Christine headed towards Iran. The last year they spent in Asia and not long ago they started their Australia trip in Darwin. They are in the final stages of their long travels, so they have decided to treat themselves with renting a car for a month and cruising around in the South-Eastern part of Australia. We meet them – by surprise! - while riding the “Great Ocean Road”. For three days we meet up in the evenings (during the day those guys do more kilometers than us) and spend many hours chatting about experiences in different continents….It was great to see them again! www.radfahren-gegen-krebs.de

16.03.2008, close to Camperdown (Victoria, Australia). Clyde Sefton: Clyde is the most famous cyclist we wet so far. We didn’t meet him on bicycle, but that doesn’t matter, as this guy has probably more kilometers “in his legs” than we can imagine. He was a professional cyclist for several years and has (amongst many other successes) won Olympic Silver at the 1972 games in Munich. We are invited to his farm close to Camperdown and get to see an Olympic medal for the first time in our lives. Clyde’s modest comment to that: “It’s something nice to have”, he says with a big grin on his likeable face.

14.02., 15.02., 20.02. and 21.02.2008, Nullarbor (West- und South-Australia). Jordan and Anthony: After some good sleep in the bushes we are pushing our bikes back on the street, as all of a sudden two cyclists are standing on the side of the road. Jordan is biking from Perth to Sydney and Anthony joining the part through the "Nullarbor Plains". We meet those two funny characters again on the track, but bike in different paces. After the survival of the Nullarbor we are staying on the same campsite and celebrate the completed crossing of the plains...

22.12.2007 - 26.12.2007, Cape L'Agulhas, (South Africa). Bruno: We have planned to meet Bruno (see poste from 16.10. - 17.11.) again at Christmas. After we parted in Zamia he was riding across Botswana and South Africa while we took the route through Namibia. On the 22nd of december we meet again in South Africa, ride together to Cape L'Agulhas, the southernmost tip of Africa, and celebrate Christmas together... www.bruno-lafrikavelo.com

30.10.2007, at Lake Malawi, Malawi. Aili and Bobbie: Sweating like hell - we are biking southwards together with Bruno (see bikers we met further down) on the coastal road (which is seldom really at the coast) along Lake Malawi, when Aili and Bobbie suddenly appear on the road. The swedish couple is travelling in Africa since two years: first with public transport, but now since  four months by bicycle from Cape Town northwards. Target is Addis Ababa - have a good time in Ethiopia! www.mytb.org/le_flow Suddenly a mororcycle stops - see other vehicles!

16.10.2007 - 17.11.2007, Das Es Salaam, Tanzania until southern Zambia (border to Botswana). Bruno: Just as we left Dar Es Salaam in a hell of a traffic, we met Bruno. The french cyclist started in Dakar and biked in Westafrica and Madagascar. Now he is on his way from Addis to Capetown. Since 16.10. we are cycling together - probably until the Victoria Falls. Then Bruno is planning to take the Botswana route and we will head for Namibia... www.bruno-lafrikavelo.com

10.10.2007, about 80 kilometers after Segera, Tanzania. Djamel: Sometimes it is really strage - no other cyclists for months and suddenly you meet "all" at once... Also from Djamel (a french fellow too) we heared before. We meet him out in the "somewhere" of Tanzanias countryside. On the way from Capetown to see his brother in Nairobi and further on to India,... www.tigroux.travelblog.fr

09.10.2007, Segera, Tanzania. Marie-Helene and Pierre Costes: We had already heared from those two: "There are two riding in front of you..." On the 9th of October we happen to stay in the same (and only) hotel of the village. The two french grandparents just bought bikes and started their voyage (they were neither travelling by bike before, nor were they in Africa). Along the Danube to Rumania, into Turkey and hopping to Tel Aviv and Sinai via Cyprus. Then flying to Nairobi and continuing by bike. Target is Madagascar...

02.06.2007, 40 kilometers after Gondar, Ethiopia. Alvaro Neil, the clown on the bike: Shortly after we left Gondar we bump into a spanish cyclist. Since a couple of years Alvaro is on the road in South America and Africa. Unfortunately there is not much time we can spend together - everyone has a target to reach today... www.biciclown.com

27.05.2007, Gondar, Ethiopia. Lea and Kobe: We heard about this belgian cycling-couple which should be ahead of us already when we were in Khartoum... When we are getting into Gondar a crowd of black kids is running after us - and one white face! Kobe is literally picking us off the road :-) He and Lea started biking in Belgium and got stranded in Gondar. They help building up a social project for orphants (see: social projects). We are guests in their apartment and spend some nice and relaxing days together... www.fietsenvoorendoorafrika.6x.to (in dutch)

19.05.2007, Al Fau, Sudan. Kurt and Dorothee: What's that?! Again someone cycling towards us on the other side of the road! After hours of talking in a small tea-place, we decide to spend the night together and put camp in an insect-saturated foresty spot along the road. Lots of storys to tell, lots of storys to listen to and lots of insects to shake off. The german-swiss couple is pushing the bike since 9 years and is now on its way back to Europe... www.reducespeed.de

18.05.2007, Al Hassaheisa, Sudan. Jason: Just when we start our day and take a swing into the mainroad we see a biker standing on the opposite side. Since 13 years Jason is on his way - one time around the world, using only human power! Over land by bike and on the oceans he is pedaling a boat..! He is at his endspurt - on his way back to England... www.expedition360.com

18.03.2007, Amman, Jordan. Curt and Dylan: Two Canadians, who happen to check-in at the same time in the same hotel as we. They started in Istanbul and are heading for Africa, Jemen and maybe further...

12.02.2007, Kas, Turkey. Juan: The Spanish solocycler is biking around Turkey. We are having tea together, waiting for the rain to stop. http://www.cicli.blogspot.com/

05.02.2007, Marmaris, Turkey. Christine und Stefan: After almost 7000 kilometers across Europe the first Long-Distance-Bikers! For four days we hit the road together - from Marmaris eastwards. The two Germans are on their way around the world: http://www.radfahren-gegen-krebs.de/en/
